Here are the top stories in Boise today:
- Boise-based Micron has decided to stay home. BoiseDev editor Don Day reports the company announced Thursday morning plans to build a $15 billion manufacturing plant in Boise. The fabrication plant, the first built in the U.S. in 20 years, will produce chips for devices like cell phones and computers. Once completed, the plant will employ 2,000 "direct" jobs in addition to other companies hired to support the facility. The announcement came after Micron will receive federal tax support under the recently signed CHIPS and Science Act and also after the State of Idaho placed a permanent cap on its property tax liability in the state. - Former Rep. Aaron von Ehlinger will be trading his seat in the Idaho Legislature for a prison cell after his sentencing on Wednesday. The Idaho Capital Sun's Kelcie Mosely-Morris was present as the former Republican lawmaker was ordered to spend a minimum of 8 years in prison with a maximum sentence of 20 years for his conviction of rape involving a legislative intern. Von Ehlinger will also be required to register as a sex offender and is not to have contact with the victim until at least 2055. Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year sentence while the defense requested a 180-day retained jurisdiction followed by supervision. (idahocapitalsun)
- Boise Police Chief Ryan Lee will not face charges after an Idaho State Police investigation found allegations that Lee injured an officer while demonstrating two types of hold techniques on the officer did not meet the criteria for criminal charges. KTVB-TV staff report the officer, Sgt. Kirk Rush, filed a tort claim against the city claiming his neck was broken by Lee during the incident. Due to a conflict of interest, the investigation was moved to the Clearwater County Prosecutor's Office. The status of Rush's possible lawsuit against the city is unclear. (ktvb)
- Boise ended the month of August the way it started... hot! CBS2 news staff report the final day of August hit 106 degrees. The heat marked 23 days of 100 degrees or warmer for our summer, an all-time record. Keep the sunscreen out as the forecast is again calling for temperatures to remain above average into next week. Remember, it is a dry heat so we can't complain. (idahonews)
