Here are the top stories today in Boise:
- When the trial for Lori Vallow Daybell begins in Boise in just a few weeks, the death penalty will be off the table. EastIdahoNews reporter Rett Nelson reports District Judge Steven Boyce made a ruling on a motion to dismiss the death penalty. The ruling applies only to Lori Vallow Daybell, not Chad Daybell as their trials were severed earlier this year. Boyce also ruled on a motion to compel prosecutors to turn over all written and recorded statements made by Chad while in custody. (eastidahonews)
- The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is advising pet owners to keep an eye out after an off-leash dog was attacked in Southeast Boise. KTVB-TV staff report coyotes are making their way down to the valley as denning season approaches. During this time, coyotes become very territorial to other canines, including your family pet. (KTVB.com)
- Idaho judges may soon be able to shield the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges and their families from public disclosure. The IdahoCapitalSun's Clark Corbin writes the Idaho House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill allowing justices, judges or magistrate judges with chambers in the state of Idaho to submit an application to have public agencies exempt their street address and telephone number and those of their family members from public disclosure. The bill is next heading to the governor's office for final consideration. (idahocapitalsun)
- A documented Caldwell gang member will spend at least the next 32 years in prison for the murder of a rival. CBS2 news staff report Ethan S. Alamaraz was sentenced for the murder of Jose Hernandez in a drive by shooting in September 2021. (idahonews)
- If we look at the fate of malls across the nation, Boise made the correct decision. But in the same sentence, what was torn down in the past would be extraordinary today. FromBoise's Sharon Fisher looks back at old Boise plans to build an almost 1 million-square-foot, two-story, enclosed shopping mall in downtown. Preparing for this, the Boise Redevelopment Agency (BRA) started demolishing the downtown area in the 1960s. For years, empty dirt lots sat unused until the 1980s as property owners started to repurpose existing structures into what is downtown today. (fromboise)
