Here are the top stories today in Boise:
- In years past, a trip to a Boise park may have come with a distinct smell if you arrived immediately after the parks department sprayed a pesticide. Perhaps you may have even grabbed the kid or pet and returned home after observing the blades of grass with that funny shine. Boise Patch carries the news the Boise Parks and Recreation Department continues with a three-year Pesticide Reduction Pilot Program on more than 1,600 acres of park land and more than 5,000 acres of open space across the City of Boise.
- The battle over the placement of a new homeless shelter is heading to court. KTVB-TV staff report the Veterans Park Neighborhood Association is asking the courts to decide on a decision made by the Boise City Council allowing the Interfaith Sanctuary to construct a shelter on State Street. The council approved a conditional use permit, overriding a previous denial by the city's planning and zoning commission. The shelter would house 205 individuals once completed. (KTVB.com)
- A Boise man received a sentence of life in prison for the sexual abuse of a child over a period of months in 2018. CBS2 news staff report Joseph Ribich, already a registered sex offender, received the sentence after new convictions of four lewd conduct with a minor charges, two counts of sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 16, intimidating a witness, delivering a controlled substance, and distributing a drug to a person under the age of 18. (Idaho News)
- The media wrote numerous stories over the baby formula shortage. But Boise shoppers are starting to see a lack of other items on our local shelves. KISSFM's Stephanie Gull writes why sandwiches, your pet's feeding dish and toasting a wedding is feeling the pinch in finding items to fill the shopping list. Even the old staple of PB&J may need a visit to more than one grocery store. (1035kissfmboise)
- Boise has some wonderful old homes and is known for the city's abundance of mature trees providing shade to many. One group, Preservation Idaho, claims the city is not doing enough to make sure our old homes and trees are protected. BoiseDev's Margaret Carmel speaks with representatives of the group and city leaders over what happens to people cutting down trees without permission or even demolishing an old home without city approval.
