📰 News we're reading

1. Music note, shrimp and a giant heel among items dropped New Year's Eve (yorkdispatch.com) — Boise’s signature New Year’s Eve Potato Drop will once again light up the State Capitol, with a giant glowing “spud” rising at 6 p.m. and dropping at midnight alongside fireworks. The feature spotlights Boise among quirky celebrations nationwide, from Key West’s ruby-red heel to shrimp and pierogi drops in other cities.

2. Bogus Basin temporarily closes tubing hill due to icy conditions (ktvb.com) — If you were planning to hit the Bogus Basin tubing hill, be aware it was shut down Friday after icy conditions made runs too fast to manage safely. The Boise-area resort contacted affected guests for refunds or rescheduling and expects new snow and cold temperatures soon, which should improve both tubing and skiing conditions for upcoming visits.

3. High avalanche risk in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains (ktvb.com) — Backcountry users from Boise heading into the Sawtooths should know avalanche danger is rated high across several central Idaho zones, including the Sawtooth and Western Smoky Mountains and key passes like Galena and Banner summits. The Sawtooth Avalanche Center warns heavy snow and wind are overloading weak layers and urges people to avoid steep terrain or postpone trips until conditions stabilize.

4. Prisoners help restore Boise Foothills with sagebrush. Trump put funding at risk (idahostatesman.com) — Incarcerated men and women at Idaho prisons are growing tens of thousands of sagebrush seedlings to help restore the fire-scarred Boise Foothills and nearby areas. Their Sagebrush in Prisons Project faces uncertainty after federal conservation grants were abruptly cut by the Trump administration, but Idaho Fish and Game funding may keep the Boise-area programs going into 2026.
