Here are the top stories today in Boise:
- The bill has arrived to the State of Idaho and it is a big one. CBS2's Zachary Taylor reports a transgender inmate, who sued Idaho after she was denied gender confirmation surgery while incarcerated in the prison south of Boise, will reportedly be awarded $2.5 million in legal fees. At the time, Adree Edmo was serving a 10-year sentence for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy. Edmo went to court asking she be allowed to transfer to a women's prison, allow her access to "gender appropriate" clothing, and also provide her with gender confirmation surgery. According to the Associated Press, a federal judge recently ordered Idaho and its prison medical care provider to "pay more than $2.5 million in legal fees" to Edmo. (idahonews)
- Here is another example we are returning back to normal after COVID-19. Veterans were once again enjoying a day of fishing and a bowl of chili according to KIVI-TV's Kelsie Rose. The annual event had been on hiatus due to the pandemic, but veteran patients at the Idaho State Veterans Home and the Boise VA Medical Center were once again honored at the Juniper Ranch Fishing & Chili Feed Event. (Idaho News 6 Boise Twin Falls)
- The weekend weather looks to be perfect for a trip around Boise looking at homes for sale. Boise Patch has five new homes on the market ready for your inspection. Even if you fail to find a home to purchase, looking at these may just provide you a great idea what to do with that dead spot underneath the stairs. (Boise Patch)
- Local Boise businesses in the River Street are not excited with the City of Boise's idea of opening day shelter services for the city’s homeless community in the area. BoiseDev senior reporter Margaret Carmel reports the businesses state the city has failed to address its concerns about littering, crime and other quality of life issues they say are caused by some members of the homeless community. The area is part of the Shoreline Urban Renewal District, which was created in early 2019 with the idea of using it to develop a new stadium for the Boise Hawks. (boisedev)
- If you were out in the desert between Boise and Mountain Home and found a monkey, what would you do? If your answer is start a zoo, that is exactly what the City of Boise did in 1916. KIDO's Nikki West provides a look back on how our beloved zoo first started. A monkey escaped from a traveling circus and when found, the circus had already departed. From almost closing in 1961 to the first admission price of 35 cents in 1971, take a look at the zoo's past. (kidotalkradio)
