Here are the top stories in Boise today:
- The smoke was thick in Boise Monday, and everyone was talking about the fire at the outlet yard of the Idaho Youth Ranch. KTVB-TV's Krystal Mullins has a video of the blaze along with a statement from staff regarding the status of the thrift stores remaining open. Crews were on the scene Tuesday morning cleaning up and determining the cause. (KTVB)
- Local baseball fans may soon be cheering for the Colorado Rockies. Rocky Mountain High School graduate and recent Gonzaga star Gabriel Hughes was drafted No. 10 in the recent Major League Baseball draft, going to the Rockies as a pitcher. Hughes was twice selected as the Gatorade Idaho Baseball player of the year during his time at Rocky Mountain. KIVI-TV's Brendyn Jones writes Hughes success goes beyond the pitching mound. After graduating from Gonzaga in just three years, his plans for medical school could be placed on hold for a major league career and a projected almost $5 million salary. (kivitv)
- Authorities were at Lucky Peak Reservoir Tuesday in what was described as a "recovery effort," according to a story by CBS2 news staff. Dive teams and others are looking for a person who went under the water after falling off a personal watercraft Monday evening. (idahonews)
- Residents living near Capital High School may soon have a new park to enjoy. Boise Patch has the announcement city leaders are considering a land donation by the Settlers Irrigation District of three acres. The city reports the park would place 700 residents within 10 minutes from the proposed park. Exactly when a picnic can take place is undetermined at this time. (Boise Patch)
- In the world of local journalism, there exists stories that grow beyond the Boise city limits. These are stories that grab attention even when your neighborhood is not involved. King 5's Chris Ingalls reports three particles recently tested from the necktie of D.B. Cooper may provide information on who the hijacker was. It was November 24, 1971, when Cooper jumped from a plan with a parachute and $200,000 in ransom money. His left behind tie was recently tested and found to contain amounts of a titanium-antimony alloy found only at a Midland, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant with ties to the aerospace industry.
