62-Year-Old Woman Is Pregnant Thanks To Daughter's Eggs and IVF
Kathy Blattner is expecting a baby girl in April through in vitro fertilization — and her daughter is pregnant too.
WATERLOO, IL — A 62-year-old expecting mother has her daughter to thank for the pregnancy, WGN reports.
Kathy Blattner and her husband John both wanted children, they told the television station, but Blattner's eggs were no longer viable. So her cousin donated her own eggs, and Blattner — then in her 40s — got pregnant with her now 12-year-old son through in vitro fertilization.
A few years ago, Blattner decided she wanted more children, but few fertility doctors would still see her because of her age.

Finally, Blattner found a doctor and another willing donor — her own daughter from a previous marriage, Sarah Utz. That was two years ago, and Blattner soon gave birth to a second son.
“She carried him. She is the mother,” Utz told WGN. “I don’t feel any genetic connection other than I’m a sister.”

But, Blattner wasn't done. After thawing out the remaining embryos earlier this year, she's now expecting another baby girl in April.
Oh, and her daughter is pregnant too.
The women said the situation was like something out of the comedy film "Father of the Bride," but some doctors say the risks are nothing to laugh at.
According to the Mayo Clinic, mothers over age 35 are more likely to develop gestational diabetes and high blood pressure, and babies are more likely to be born prematurely, with low birth weight or chromosome abnormalities.
But, Blattner's doctor, Sherman Silber, told WGN that older women also tend to have more confident, intelligent babies, and he believes society shouldn't look down on older mothers any more than older fathers.
