Massive Cheese Recall Includes IL, Products Sold At Walmart, Target, Aldi

Over 1 million bags of shredded cheese, including some sold by major national retailers, are part of a sweeping recall affecting 31 states — including Illinois — and Puerto Rico, according to authorities.

The voluntary recall by Great Lakes Cheese Co. Inc. of Ohio was issued due to potential metal fragments in the products, authorities said.

The recall was initiated in October but classified on Monday as a Class II recall, meaning the items “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Among the dozens of brands affected by the recall are Target’s Good & Gather, Walmart’s Great Value, Happy Farms by Aldi and Sprouts Farmers Market.

The types of shredded cheese being recalled are: low-moisture part-skim mozzarella, various Italian-style blends, various pizza-style blends, a mozzarella and provolone blend, and a mozzarella and parmesan blend.

Over 250,000 cases of the cheese were recalled, the majority of which were solely mozzarella.

The sell-by dates on the bags range from January to March of 2026.

The affected states are: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
