Rodent Surge Possible In IL After Summer Heat: 'The Perfect Storm'

"When the environment becomes too hostile for rodents in the wild, they turn to our homes for food and shelter."

ILLINOIS — The summer heat in Illinois could lead to a wave of rodent infestations, according to one pest control specialist.

"The summer heatwaves we’ve experienced have created the perfect storm for a surge in rodent activity,” Zachary Smith, of Smith’s Pest Management, said in a news release. “When the environment becomes too hostile for rodents in the wild, they turn to our homes for food and shelter. Unfortunately, that means an invasion is likely."

Common signs of an infestation include droppings, gnaw marks, scurrying sounds, footprints in dust, and nests of shredded paper and fabric in attics, basements or behind appliances, according to Smith.

To prevent an infestation, seal entry points to your home and trim vegetation to reduce hiding places near your house. Remove food and water sources by using airtight containers, cleaning up spills and regularly disposing of garbage, as well as fixing leaky pipes and faucets and removing standing water.

“Preventing a rodent infestation is always easier than dealing with one after it’s taken hold,” Smith said in the news release.

If you do notice rodent activity, traps can help control the problem before it becomes unmanageable.
