McHenry County Styrofoam Recycling Program Seeks Volunteers

The Environmental Defenders are seeking individuals who can dedicate four hours a month to Styrofoam recycling.

The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County has a Styrofoam Collection & Recycling Program that collects Styrofoam from citizens at three sites (Woodstock, Crystal Lake & Algonquin). Once each week, the Styrofoam from the sites is collected by two volunteers that drive a 26-foot rental truck to be taken to a warehouse in West Dundee.

The program will be discontinued after September 28 if they cannot meet the obligation for weekly pick up by volunteers.

The Defenders need four teams of two people that can volunteer their time and energy for four hours each month.

The volunteers will be responsible for:

Picking up the 26-foot rental truck.

Collecting large bags of Styrofoam at the three collection sites. Each bag weighs about 35 pounds.

Load the bags into the truck and unload them at a warehouse location in West Dundee.

Return the rental truck.

Environmental Defenders of McHenry County has insurance that covers damage to the truck and other property while the volunteer is operating the truck. The volunteers are reimbursed for the cost of the rental and the fuel.
