Almost 24 Cats, Dogs Adopted During Free Adoption Day In Aurora

All adoption fees, and Aurora's mandatory city registration, were waived during the "Christmas in July" event Saturday.

AURORA, IL — Nearly two dozen cats and dogs found their forever homes at a free adoption event Saturday in Aurora.

Aurora Animal Care and Control hosted its "Christmas in July" free adoption day, causing a line to form early and wrap around the South River Street building as locals waited to interact with the furry friends.

During the four-hour event, all adoption fees, as well as the city's mandatory registration, were free. Prices, depending on the age of canines or felines, normally range from $75 to $200, according to Clayton Muhammad, Aurora's chief communications officer.

More than half of the adoptable pets at the facility were placed with a permanent family by the end of the event, Muhammad said.

The clinic also offered free microchipping on the same day, prompting the owners of an additional 80 cats and dogs to stop by to receive microchips, which help track lost animals.
