AURORA, IL — Cowherd Middle School 6th-grade English Language Arts teacher and instructional coach, Dr. Kathy O’Brien, was recently recognized by Newsela, an educational platform that turns current events and authentic content into accessible classroom reading materials. Newsela allows teachers to differentiate instruction by providing the same article at multiple reading levels, helping all students build comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Dr. O’Brien was honored for her exceptional use of Newsela to enhance literacy instruction and support student engagement, particularly through her work in Cowherd’s Dual Language program. Her efforts help students connect classroom learning to the real world, strengthen language development, and grow as confident, capable readers.
