3 Chicago Police Officers Shot on West Side Monday Night

Shooting took place in 3700 block of West Polk in Homan Square on the West Side. Officers hospitalized with non life threatening wounds.

CHICAGO, IL - Three Chicago police officers were shot during a narcotics investigation on the West Side Monday night.

According to police, officers approached two suspicious individuals in the 3700 block of W. Polk around 9:40 p.m. when one of the men fled. During a foot pursuit, the suspect shot at the police, striking and injuring three.

At least one officer returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

The officers were taken to Stroger Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. According to Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante, they will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days following the incident.

Police recovered a weapon at the scene.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement Monday night.

"Every day the dedicated men and women of the Chicago Police Department put themselves in danger so the rest of us can be safe," he said. "Tonight we were reminded of the dangers that our police face, and the bravery they routinely display as three of our officers were shot in the line of duty. The thoughts and prayers of our entire city are with the officers and their families during this difficult time."

The matter is now being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
