Edna White Garden hosts request attendees consider donating non-perishable food items to help with the pantry heading into fall and winter.
The Edna White Community Garden hosts its sixth annual Day of the Dead celebration of life Saturday November 1st at 4 p.m. at 1850 West Monterey Avenue.
Day of the Dead is a cultural celebration that honors the deceased while celebrating life. It is a time for reflection, joy and connection, allowing families to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on.
The local community garden organizers invite local residents to remember their loved ones lost through “Day of the Dead” traditional gestures featuring an ofrenda, Spanish for "offering" and an altar for the placement of photos of deceased, symbolic decorations, favorite foods, drinks and candles to light the way.

During “Day of the Dead" or Día de Muertos, families gather together to remember and honor their deceased loved ones.
"We encourage everyone to honor this sacred, joyous Day of the Dead tradition by bringing food, flowers, photos, as well as friends and family members," said Kathy Figel of the Edna White Garden. "We enjoy listening to shared prayers and stories about those who have died and left a lasting impression on us."

The evening will include a fire pit for s'mores, face painting, festive beverages and more.
"Tables will be open for those who would like to bring and share pot luck dinners," Figel said.
The Garden also requests attendees consider donating non-perishable food items to help with the pantry.
Organizers will show the movie "Coco" at dusk which tells the story of young boy named Miguel who loves music and must keep his love of music a secret from his family. The 12-year-old boy is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of a deceased musician, his great-great-grandfather, to return him to his family and reverse their ban on music.
Edna White Garden is located at the corner of 111th and Esmond – 1850 West Monterey Ave.
