Letter to the Editor: Supporting David Olsen for Downers Grove Village Council

Dear Editor,

Increased taxes. The creation of a storm water utility. Expensive infrastructure projects. These are only some of the issues the Downers Grove Village Council must continue to address moving forward. There is one village commissioner candidate who has clearly differentiated himself leading up to the upcoming municipal elections on April 9 - David Olsen.

Downers Grove ought to have a new perspective on the Village Council to challenge existing assumptions and bring ideas for improvement. For example, the Downers Grove FY 2013 adopted budget - available on the Village website budget message section - says the total municipal budget for all funds consists of approximately $104.6 million in revenues and $124.6 million in expenses. The Village is budgeting $20 million it does not yet have to spend. While expenses may be budgeted to exceed revenues through additional income by issuing bonds, the point is spending needs to be kept in check to keep Downers Grove in good financial shape. I believe David Olsen will bring the fresh perspective we need to address these fiscal matters.

Moreover, I believe David Olsen will truly represent the needs of Downers Grove residents. As a candidate, he has tirelessly knocked on doors and met residents at local events to understand their needs. In fact, he has hosted chats at coffee shops to further engage with any Downers Grove resident that would like to meet him. His candor and approachability ensure that he will be effective voice on the Village Council and take all views into consideration. I have only recently met David, but I know his energy and sincere desire to improve government and represent residents will further make him an asset to the Downers Grove Village Council.

On election day on April 9, a vote for David Olsen is a vote that will improve our village.
