The Iraq War, 10 Years of Casualties: Downers Grove Feels Its Touch
Tuesday, March 19, marked the 10th anniversary of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. Two men from Downers Grove are among the 4,802 American casualties.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week—on March 19, 2003—and although officially "over," fighting continues with discouraging persistence.
By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 162 Illinoisans.

- Pfc. Sean Thomas Cardelli, 20. Killed by enemy small arms fire during combat operations near Falluja, Iraq on Feb. 1, 2006.
- Sgt. Thomas Michael Gilbert, 24. Killed while conducting combat operations in Falluja, Anbar province, Iraq, on Oct. 25, 2006.
