$5M Bond Set For Bartlett Man Accused Of Fatally Stabbing Mom
The man has been charged with one count of first degree murder stemming from accusations he stabbed his mother 12 times, killing her.

DUPAGE COUNTY, IL — Bond for a Bartlett man accused of killing his mother was set at $5 million Friday morning by Judge Robert Miller, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Bartlett Chief of Police Patrick Ullrich announced, according to a release. The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office reported 64-year-old Edward Mitzelfeld, of 760 Bryn Mawr Avenue, has been charged with one count of first degree murder stemming from accusations he stabbed 93-year-old Frances Kelly 12 times Wednesday, killing her.
According to a release from the state's attorney's office, Bartlett Police Department offiers responded at 5:23 p.m. May 29 to a call at 760 Bryn Mawr Avenue, the home Mitzelfeld and Frances shared. Officers arrived to find Mitzelfeld in the front yard of the house with both hands raised, and upon going into the home found Kelly lying face down on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood, according to a release. Mitzelfeld was taken into custody.
Mitzefeld and Kelly were reportedly in the kitchen when he stabbed his mother in the back with a kitchen knife, severing her aorta and entering her lungs, the state's attorney's office said. Mitzelfeld was said to have called 911 after stabbing his mother, according to a release.

“Frances’ surviving family and friends have suffered a horrific loss and to them I offer my sincerest condolences,” Berlin said, in a release sent to Patch. “What makes this case particularly troubling is that the defendant is the victim’s son. I wish Frances’ family and friends strength and courage as they say goodbye to one family member and find themselves looking at another family member accused of her murder. I would like to thank the Bartlett Police Department as well as the Major Crimes Task Force for their outstanding work on this very sad case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Helen Kapas, Rob Willis and Nick Noble for their efforts in bringing charges against this defendant.”
The state's attorney's office said Mitzelfeld’s next court appearance is set for June 3 for a ruling on the State’s motion to appoint a clinical psychologist.
