Chicago's 2019 Christmas Tree: From Elgin Yard To Millennium Park

The Elgin family will get to flip the switch to light up the tree during the annual tree lighting ceremony, the City said, according to WLS.

ELGIN, IL β€” A 58-foot blue spruce tree in an Elgin family's front yard was cut down Thursday morning and is on its way to Millennium Park after being selected as Chicago's 2019 Christmas tree, according to WLS. Gene Nelson and his wife were already planning to get rid of the tree that's been in their front yard for more than 20 years, and saw donating the tree as the best way to give it a "second life," WLS reported.

Neal Heitz from the City of Chicago told the station there were more than 41 applicants looking to have their tree selected to be the 106th Chicago Christmas tree.

According to Heitz, the city's annual tree lighting ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. on November 22 at Millennium Park, during which Nelson and his grandchildren will get to flip the switch to light up the tree.
