Man Arrested After Stealing BMW, Crashing After Chase: Elgin PD

According to report, this man was found not guilty of setting a homeless woman on fire after she refused to have sex with him in 2014.

ELGIN, IL — The Kane County Sheriff's Office reported a man is being held at the Kane County jail on charges stemming from accusations he stole a vehicle Tuesday, Feb. Anthony D. Cohn, 37, of the 3700 block of Grand Avenue, faces felony charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and is being held on $50,000 bond, according to a sheriff's department report. The Daily Herald said Cohn also faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license suspended after a Feb. 5 chase, according to Kane County court records.

Cohn, who the Daily Herald said was found not guilty of setting a homeless woman on fire after she refused to have sex with him in 2014, is accused of stealing a BMW from a driveway in Elgin, which led to a chase near the downtown area and ended when Cohn crashed into a snow bank. Elgin police report and court records report the incident started around 7:02 p.m. when a resident in the 200 block of South Weston Avenue headed the door of his silver BMW-XI close, and the man inside started the car with a key fob inside.

The chase ended around 7:32 p.m. due to icy conditions right before officers learned a BMW crashed into a snowbank at Standish and Jewett Streets, leading a K9 unit and police to follow footprints and ultimately locate Cohn under a back porch at a house on Walnut Street where he surrendered, the Daily Herald said according to a report. The news source added that officers smelled alcohol on Cohn, who ended up failing first part of field sobriety tests at the police station, according to a report.

According to the sheriff's office, Cohn's next court date is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20.
