📰 News we're reading

1. 'Chemical Irritants' Used By Federal Agents, 7 Receive Medical Care: Police (patch.com) — Elgin residents saw a heavy federal law enforcement presence after a traffic crash tied to “enforcement activities” led to masked agents operating around Maple Lane. Chemical irritants used by those agents prompted multiple 911 calls and medical treatment for seven people at the scene. Elgin police emphasized they will respond to service calls while following the Illinois Trust Act’s limits on assisting federal immigration enforcement.

2. Commissioners divided over plans to build Hindu temple in Elgin (chicagotribune.com) — Elgin’s proposed Hindu temple on Galt Boulevard is heading to the City Council without a recommendation after planning commissioners split over its reduced size and traffic concerns. Neighbors argue the project still conflicts with the city’s comprehensive plan, while supporters say the scaled-back design meets Elgin’s standards and deserves a fair resolution.

3. Student-operated U-46 radio station, longest-running in Illinois, celebrates 75 years (abc7chicago.com) — If you’ve ever tuned to 88.9 FM around downtown Elgin, that student-run WEPS signal from U-46 is now celebrating 75 years on the air. The Elgin-based station, whose call letters honor Elgin Public Schools, gives local high school students hands-on experience in broadcasting, confidence-building public speaking, and creative programming in both English and Spanish.

4. Latest Standings Announced for the 2025 BroadwayWorld Chicago Awards; RVC Starlight Theatre Leads Favorite Theatre! (broadwayworld.com) — Several Up and Coming Theatre/Elgin Summer Theater productions, including The Wizard of Oz, are strong contenders in multiple BroadwayWorld Chicago Award categories, from choreography to lighting and music direction. Local performers and the company itself are also vying for Favorite Local Theatre, and residents can still vote to help boost Elgin’s presence on the regional theatre stage.

5. Palatine Resident Charge with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon After Displaying a Gun During a Dispute (arlingtoncardinal.com) — Elgin Police officers recently arrested a Palatine man wanted for allegedly displaying a handgun and making threats during an October dispute in Palatine, then turned him over to Palatine authorities. The 30-year-old suspect was later released under conditions and is scheduled for a January court appearance, as the investigation continues.
