Elmhurst's Ozy Dies After 6 Years of Service

The dog will hold a "special place in the hearts" of Elmhurst officers and the community.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst police K-9 Ozy died Thursday after playing an integral part in the police department since 2019, the city announced.

Ozy partnered with Officer Brandt Cappitelli. Their bond was described as inseparable.

"Throughout his service, Ozy distinguished himself as an exceptional patrol canine, excelling in criminal apprehension, tracking, searches, officer protection, and narcotics detection," the city said in a news release. "Just last summer, Ozy protected several Elmhurst police officers when he apprehended a man in possession of a stolen handgun while on the run."

Ozy made many visits to schools, neighborhood roll calls, citizens police academy classes and local events.

According to the city, Ozy suffered an abdominal issue Tuesday and was immediately taken for veterinary care. After an emergency surgery, Ozy was reported to be doing well, but on Thursday, he declined and died with Cappitelli at his side.

"Our police K-9s are regarded as active members of the department and special members of the police family," the city said. "Ozy will always hold a special place in the hearts of Elmhurst Police Officers and the Elmhurst community."
