Aqua Lounge's Roof Fire Sparked By Electrical Transformer

No one was hurt, and the Frankfort club will remain closed while its roof is repaired following Wednesday night's blaze.

FRANKFORT, IL — A stretch of Lincoln Highway on Frankfort's east side was shut down Wednesday night because of a roof fire at a village dance club, according to the Frankfort Fire District. Although a few customers and employees were at Aqua Lounge when the blaze broke out, everyone safely escaped the building, and no one was hurt, Deputy Chief Sean Fierce said Thursday.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire at about 7:34 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, in the 7900 block of Lincoln Highway, according to Fierce. The blaze at the night spot started after an electrical transformer on the roof caught fire, he said.

Despite being a relatively small fire, Frankfort police closed off Lincoln Highway between 80th Avenue and Frankfort Square Road so traffic wouldn't interfere with firefighters at the scene, Fierce said. It only took crews about 15 minutes to put out the fire, he added.

Fierce said the damage to the club wasn't extensive, but estimates hadn't been determined yet. Aqua Lounge will remain closed while repairs are done to the club's roof, he added.

In March, Aqua Lounge was sued by the family of a 35-year-old Frankfort man who was fatally stuck by a drunken driver in 2016. The wrongful death lawsuit accuses the club of overserving Nathan R. Maslan, the driver of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee that hit and killed Justin Grannon Aug. 20, 2016, while he was walking near 80th and North avenues.

Grannon was seriously hurt in the accident, and he later died from his injuries at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Maslan was charged with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide, and the lawsuit claims he didn't keep a proper lookout and negligently drove his vehicle.
