Shooting Graffiti At Summit Hill School Poses No Threat: Cops

No arrests have been made, but the Will County Sheriff's Office will file charges if a suspect is taken into custody, D161 officials said.

FRANKFORT, IL — Will County Sheriff's Office investigators have determined that graffiti threatening a shooting at Summit Hill Junior High School does not represent a danger to students and staff, according to Summit Hill School District 161 officials. No arrests have been made in the incident, but the case is still under investigation, said District 161 Supt. Barb Rains.

A school janitor discovered the school shooting-graffiti Thursday, April 19, and Will County sheriff's deputies canvased the building and the campus but found nothing. An added police presence remained at the school Thursday and Friday, however.

Another piece of threatening graffiti was discovered April 7 at the junior high. School officials contacted the Will County Sheriff's Office about the writing, which also contained a cartoon character.

According to Rains, district officials met Monday, April 23, with Will County sheriff Lt. Edward Hayes and members of the law enforcement agency's juvenile crimes unit. If sheriff's detectives find probable cause during their investigation, felony disorderly conduct charges will be filed against the suspect, she said.

"The District will continue to speak with students to gain additional information," Rains wrote in an email Tuesday. "If warranted, the District will seek disciplinary consequences up to and including expulsion."

The district had increased security since the graffiti was discovered. Routine practices were "tightened" and an additional security camera was installed in a hallway of the junuor high school, Rains said.

No other threatening graffiti has been found at other District 161 schools, according to the superintendent.
