Geneva Activates Warming Shelters Ahead Of 'Bitterly Cold' Weekend

The city shared where locals in need of warmth or shelter can go this weekend, when "bitterly cold conditions" are expected.

GENEVA, IL — The Geneva police and fire departments will serve as warming centers for locals in need of warmth as wind chills are expected to dip below zero over the coming days, city officials said.

The Geneva Police Department, at 20 Police Plaza, and the Geneva Fire Department, 200 East Side Drive, will both be available 24 hours a day, though no sleeping accommodations will be available.

The Geneva Public Library, at 227 S. Seventh St., also serves as a warming center. The building will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Other municipal buildings will be closed.

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Advisory beginning Friday evening through the early morning on Dec. 15, when "bitterly cold conditions" are expected. Wind chills as low as 30 below zero are possible on Saturday night and Sunday.

Snow is also expected between 6 p.m. Thursday and 4 a.m. Friday. Most of the Chicago area will see under 1 inch of snow, with some areas to the south and southwest forecast for up to 2 inches of snow, Patch reported.
