Community Invited to Glen Ellyn Sept. 11 Remembrance Ceremony

At 8:59 a.m. Tuesday, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company, first responders, residents and officials will take a moment to stop and remember the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The fire company is inviting residents, and anyone who is interested, to attend the remembrance ceremony.

Every year, about 40 to 60 members of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company attend the ceremony, which began in 2002, said Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the fire company. 

Firefighter Jim Littwin started the ceremony as a way to honor those who had died on Sept. 11, he said. 

“We've held a candlelight ceremony every year since 2002 and will make that an every five year event,” he said. “With the years in between being the flag lowering and moment of silence which we will observe this year.”

The flag lowering and moment of silence will be held at 8:59 a.m., the time when the first tower collapsed at the World Trade Center, he said. 

“At the end of that day, 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 police officers and 2,608 civilians had perished,” Eldridge said.

The gathering will be held at the corner of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

“We all feel it is important to remember those men and women who answered the call that day and gave their lives helping others,” he said. 

The remembrance ceremony will be held at 8:59 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Main Street.
