Crews Prep For Snow Removal As Winter Storm Approaches Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn's Public Works Department is prepping its salt trucks and snow plows and offering safety tips to residents as Thursday's winter storm looms. Drivers are expected to work in 12-hour shifts to keep the streets and sidewalks clear.
The winter storm warning takes effect at 12 p.m. Thursday and extends through 6 a.m. Saturday for Glen Ellyn. The forecast calls for consistent snowfall, blowing snow, dangerously low temperatures and winds that may gust up to 45 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
The village's snow removal strategy is as follows:

- Major streets cleared of snow, including Main Street, Hill Avenue and Park Boulevard, streets parking lots, hilly cul de sacs and the Taylor Hill underpass in the Central Business District.
- Secondary streets are cleared of snow, including Dawes, Hillside and Ridgewood Avenues
- Alleys, cul de sacs and dead ends are cleared of snow
- Four-feet paths plowed on sidewalks in the Central Business District if snowfall is 1.5 inches or fewer
- If snowfall exceeds 1.5 inches, other crews are contracted by the village's downtown alliance to plow sidewalks
Per Glen Ellyn's website, public works crews plow roughly 90 miles of roadways and more than 100 cul de sacs, alleys and dead end streets throughout the village during a snowstorm.
Some streets are not plowed by the village of Glen Ellyn because they fall under the purview of the Illinois Department of Transportation, DuPage County or other government agencies. These roadways include:

- Butterfield Road
- Geneva Road
- Park Boulevard to the south of Buena Vista and Raintree Drives
- Roosevelt Road
- Route 53
- St. Charles Road
Once two or more inches of snow has accumulated, drivers are not permitted to park on village streets in Glen Ellyn.
Residents are also advised to avoid pushing snow from their yards and driveways into the road.
