Fires, Hospitalized Students Prompt Warning About 'Dangerous' Social Media Trend
Parents are urged to stay vigilant amid a "dangerous" trend on social media that has the risk of starting "small fires," a news release said
GLEN ELLYN, IL — District 41 officials are warning parents about a "dangerous" social media trend that may injure their children or start "small fires," a news release said.
In the social media "challenge," students shove paper clips, graphite from pencils, push pins and other conductive objects into outlets or computer ports. The intention is to short-circuit the wiring, but officials warn "[t]his behavior is dangerous and can damage devices or even cause small fires."
A middle school student in Connecticut was recently hospitalized following a laptop fire that is believed to have been the result of this challenge. The student now faces criminal charges.

Parents are encouraged to talk to their kids about "the importance of using school equipment responsibly," the news release said.
According to District 41 officials, disciplinary action will be taken if students engage in this behavior.
