"[They] reminisce about making baskets for their own kids," said Ismael Lagunes, of Churchill Place, and also like to taste test the candy.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Plush bunnies, coloring books and candy line a table at Churchill Place Memory Care, as residents pick up the items one by one and place them into whimsically decorated Easter baskets. It's the third year in a row that residents of the Glen Ellyn care facility are making the Easter baskets, which will be donated to local kids in need of something extra to brighten their holiday.

This year, they're aiming to gift as many as 50 baskets, but Churchill Place is seeking help from community members to collect the toys, bubbles and other items they need to get the Easter baskets brimming.

Churchill Place plans to donate the baskets to Metropolitan Family Services of DuPage, Ismael Lagunes, Life Engagement Director at Churchill Place, told Patch.

The annual community outreach activity benefits the residents of Churchill Place too, Lagunes said, as it brings up memories of their own Easter celebrations.

"When making the baskets, our residents reminisce about making Easter baskets for their own kids," Lagunes told Patch.

"They also like to taste test the candy beforehand," he said. Who can blame them?

Lagunes said the Easter basket-making is one of many community outreach initiatives the residents at Churchill Place take part in.

In the past, they've collected 173 pounds of food for Glen House Food Pantry and residents have collected pet toys and baked dog treats to gift to local pet shelters.

"It is very important for our residents to maintain connection with the community. These activities give them joy, knowing they are helping and contributing," Lagunes said. "They provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment."

He added, "Just because they are in memory care, it does not mean they are no longer part of the community. Engaging in meaningful activities reinforces their identity, dignity, and sense of belonging, making their lives more enriching and connected."

Lagunes told Patch Churchill Place also keeps residents engaged with fitness programs, art and music therapy, gardening and social outings.

"These programs are designed to address the holistic needs of residents, promoting physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. They help maintain a sense of normalcy and purpose, reduce feelings of isolation, and enhance overall quality of life," Lagunes said.

"By offering a variety of activities, Churchill Place ensures that each resident can find something that brings them joy and fulfillment, reinforcing their sense of identity and community."

Donations for the 2025 Easter Basket Drive can be dropped off at Churchill Place, 190 Geneva Rd., Glen Ellyn through April 14.
