Neighbors Want Improvements at Glen Ellyn Apartments Excluded from TIF

Although Glen Ellyn village officials have decided to exclude the Parkside and Park Plaza apartments from the proposed Roosevelt Road TIF District, some locals are saying that another solution needs to be found for the dilapidated area, the Suburban Life reports.

"I live right there. It is not a safe environment for the World Relief children; it's not a safe environment for my children or any of our neighbors," the paper quoted Glen Ellyn resident Renie Atchison saying at a Sept. 9 meeting on the TIF district. "It has directly impacted my family. It's a slum; it needs to be addressed." 

The apartment complexes were removed from the proposed TIF after residents expressed fears that they would lose their homes to rising rents or outright demolition, with the added burden to new development that any builder would have to pay their relocation costs.

"There's got to be a major, significant investment somehow for those things to continue to be viable," the paper quoted Village Manager Mark Franz saying. "With that as an understanding, we've got to continue to try to encourage development, with or without a TIF."
