Another Major Retailer Closing Illinois Stores

The chain announced Monday that two of its 38 Illinois stores are closing.

GURNEE, IL β€” Yet another big-box chain is among retailers announcing store closings in 2018. Lowe's Companies Inc. on Monday announced it will close 20 underperforming stores nationwide. The closings, which include two Illinois locations, are expected to happen by the end of the company's 2018 fiscal year (Feb. 1, 2019).

Lowe's currently has 38 stores in Illinois. According to the chain, two Illinois locations β€” the Schaefer Road location in Granite City and the Grand Avenue location in Gurnee β€” will close.

To facilitate an orderly wind-down, the company said it intends to conduct store closing sales for most of the impacted locations with the exception of select stores in the U.S., which will close immediately. There was no word Monday on which "select" stores would close immediately.

Along with the U.S. closings, Lowe's said it will shutter 31 Canadian stores and other locations.

β€œWhile decisions that impact our associates are never easy, the store closures are a necessary step in our strategic reassessment as we focus on building a stronger business,” said Marvin R. Ellison, Lowe’s president and CEO. β€œWe believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe’s stores.”
