Dax Does It Again: K9 Unit Helps S. Barrington Police Locate Man

Lake Co. Sheriff's K9 Dax and Deputy Forlenza's rescue comes one week after both were called to help Vernon Hills police find a missing man.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — Lake County Sheriff's Office's K9 Dax has done it again! The sheriff's office said the 4-year-old police dog was called on to help members of South Barrington Police Department find a missing 25-year-old man overnight Saturday into Sunday. Police said the man was in danger and had threatened to harm himself before running away with a box cutter, according to the sheriff's office.

K9 Dax and his partner, Deputy Forlenza, got to the area and tracked the man for about a half-mile before finding him at a tree line, according to the sheriff's office.

The man was rescued and taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.

K9 Dax and Deputy Forlenza's most recent rescue comes one week after both were called to help Vernon Hills police find a missing 51-year-old man, who left a friend's house Saturday morning, Aug. 10, after threatening to hurt himself, according to the sheriff's office. They were able to track and locate the man, who was taken to a local hospital, according to the sheriff's office.

Just hours before that rescue, K9 Dax earned the Tracking Exceptional Certification during the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) Region 19 Patrol Dog Trial in Sterling Heights, Michigan. According to the sheriff's office, K9 Dax is the first dog in 12 years to earn the title in Region 19.

The duo also brought home several regional titles following the certification/competition course.

Don't forget to vote: After being named the nation's top Law Enforcement Hero Dog of the year, K9 Dax is one of seven finalists in the running for the American Humane 2019 American Hero Dog title. The seven finalists took the top spot in their individual categories, and will join their human companions on a trip to Hollywood for the awards gala, which will be broadcast nationwide on Hallmark Channel at 8/7c, on Oct. 23, (but will take place Oct. 5 at The Beverly Hilton.)
