Grayslake North High School Takes Second at State Event

Grayslake North High School earned second place in the 2012 Illinois Economics Challenge State Finals, a program of Econ Illinois.  

The event involved 40 high school students competing for the Championship title on April 18 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The team pulled ahead of eight competing student teams to earn Second Place after a hard-fought final round in the competition, according to a release by Illinois Economics Challenge representatives.

The North team included:

• Bridget O’Gorman
• Derek Pierce
• Teacher Denise Franta

They received a trophy and framed certificate for their school, individual medals and certificates as well as Visa gift cards for each team member. The championship event consisted of individual, team and quiz bowl rounds of competition.

The Illinois Economics Challenge (ILEC) is a Money Smart Week event in Chicago. The 2012 Econ Challenge is a program of Econ Illinois, funded in part through a grant from DeVry Foundation, with in-kind support provided by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the NIU College of Business.

Nearly 350 students participated in the on-line preliminary rounds of competition in March, with 10 teams qualifying for the state event.The Illinois Economics Challenge is designed to recognize Advanced Placement students who demonstrate high levels of comprehension and application of economics concepts and skills; and to reward teachers for outstanding practices in teaching economics courses.
