Join Patch at the American Heroes Event Sept. 11

Come out for the American Heroes Event on Sept. 11. Let's fill the stadium.

Ten years. It is incredible to think that the horrific and shocking attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 were 10 years ago. The images of that day, etched so clear in our minds, have barely dulled 10 years later.

What is even more incredible is the response of people to this anniversary. People wanting to connect with one another. To remember who we lost, to pay tribute to those who serve, to express thanks for what we have. People across Grayslake, across Lake County and across the country are gathering together this Sunday to recognize and reflect.

Something special has happened in Grayslake. It started out when boys in Cub Scouts Pack 91 wanted to do a small event to give their den leader Ira Fain, Petty Officer First Class in the U.S. Navy, a great send off before his deployment this month to Afghanistan.

When the kids and leaders realized his leaving coincided with the 10th anniversary of 9/11, they thought, why not do something bigger?

They wanted a big event to show those who are serving how proud we all are of them, and to demonstrate that those who were lost will never be forgotten.

So a small idea took hold, and it grew and it grew. Now the is supporting the event. The Village of Hainesville, they are behind it. , they are in. So is . So is the Grayslake Fire Department and the Grayslake Police Department. More are joining in each day. All are supporting the American Heroes event.

It has turned into a full-scale community event that will be held in a football stadium. The American Heroes event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 at Grayslake North High School stadium, 1925 N. Route 83 in Grayslake.

So what can we do?

We can join in. We can show up. We can help out.

I'll be there, volunteering to help. Patch believes community service is important so we Give 5, giving five days throughout the year to worthy causes.

Look for me in my green Patch T-shirt and say hello. I hope to see all of you - and I do mean all of you - there. Let's make this big.
