Quilt Display, Civil War Baseball Discussion This Weekend
Want to see beautiful handmade quilts? Curious about how baseball first became the national pastime during the Civil War days? The Grayslake Heritage Center has your answers about history.
The will bring the past to life through a special quilt display and by leading a hands-on discussion about baseball when it was introduced during the Civil War.
The quilt display will be at the Grayslake Heritage Center in downtown Grayslake, next to the Grayslake Fire Department. The display was created in collaboration with Sew Be It and the Grayslake Historical Society. It opens this Saturday, July 9 and run through August 20.Β
Dave Oberg, executive director of the Grayslake Heritage Center, will also conduct interactive, hands-on Civil War Base Ball discussions as part of the Lake County Discovery Museumβs 20th Annual Civil War Days, July 9 and 10.

The Civil War made the young sport of baseball, which was called base ball in the 19th century, into a national pastime.
Oberg will teach visitors of all ages the wildly different rules and even
how to cheer and jeer in fine Victorian fashion. Civil War Days takes place at the Lake County Discovery Museum, 27277 N. Forest Preserve Road in Wauconda.
The Grayslake Heritage Center is located at 164 Hawley Street and is open Wednesday-Saturday from noon-4 p.m., during downtown events and by appointment. The museum stays open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 8-October 5 to coincide with the Grayslake Farmersβ Market.
