Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Eastbound Train
The fatal Amtrak accident compounded existing delays caused by a truck hitting a bridge Tuesday.

HINSDALE, IL — The afternoon rail commute from Chicago had already been slowed even before a pedestrian was killed by an Amtrak train in Hinsdale.
“People tonight should expect a delay on the way home because we’re restricted on the number of tracks and on the speed at the site of the incident,” Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train near the West Hinsdale station about 2:30 p.m., the Chicago Tribune reported.

“An Amtrak spokesperson said the person who was struck was trespassing on the tracks,” according to the Tribune. “Nobody on board was hurt, the spokesperson said, adding that the train was being held until emergency work has been completed.”
The fatal accident happened while Metra workers were waiting for an inspector to check a bridge that had been hit by a truck on Kedzie Avenue, Reile said.

By shortly after 4 p.m., two of three affected tracks had been opened, she said, but trains were only moving at “walking speed” near the area of the fatality.
