2 Burglars Hit Downtown Joliet's Convenience Store, Arrests Made

Joliet police learned that two males were attempting to break into the closed business using an unknown hand tool.

JOLIET — The Joliet Police Department announced that a pair of underage teenagers, 16 and 17, were arrested on Sunday night following a burglary at the convenience store at the corner of Clinton and North Chicago.

The 17-year-old boy is now at the River Valley Justice Center on charges of attempted burglary, criminal damage to property and possession of burglary tools. His 16-year-old accomplice was also put into the River Valley Justice Center on charges of attempted burglary, criminal property damage, obstructing a peace officer and possession of burglary tools.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the crime happened Sunday night after the sun went down.

According to Joliet police, at 9:51 p.m., the officers responded to the convenience store at 150 N. Chicago St. after receiving a report that two males were attempting to break into the closed business using an unknown hand tool. It was learned that the incident was captured on video surveillance.

Officers were given descriptions of both suspects, officials said. Upon arrival, a male was seen running from the business and ignored commands from police to stop. Police said officers caught up to him and placed him in custody near the Cass Street bridge. He was identified as a 16-year-old.

The 17-year-old suspect was located near the Will County Courthouse and placed into custody without incident. Both matched the descriptions from the surveillance video. Following a K9 search of the area in which the suspects were observed, a shovel was recovered, according to police.
