2 Dogs Rescued As This Joliet Duplex Goes Up In Smoke

The fire was extinguished before it spread to the adjoining unit B. Unit B did suffer smoke and heavy water damage

JOLIET — The Joliet Fire Department battled one of their last fires of the year as a fire broke out around supper time at a duplex on Beechwoood Road, on the far east side of Joliet.

Joliet Battalion Chief Jim Batusich said the following events surrounded Monday evening's fire:

At 5:15 p.m., the Joliet Fire Department responded to the 2200 block of Beechwood for a structure fire in a one-story duplex.

The first crews arrived within four minutes of the call and were met with heavy black smoke and fire coming from the first floor windows of Unit A. Other crews were sent to the roof to ventilate the structure while interior crews extinguished the fire.

Fire had started on the first floor and spread into the attic. Unit A had heavy fire, smoke and water damage. The fire was extinguished before it spread to the adjoining unit B.

However, Unit B did had smoke and heavy water damage. Occupants of both apartments were able to exit the structure prior to the Joliet Fire Department's arrival.

Two dogs were rescued from Unit B during the fire. The fire was declared under control at 6 p.m. Crews remained on the scene for 90 minutes, extinguishing hot spots and checking for extension.

Fire crews from stations 1,3, 4, 5 and 6 responded to the scene. The fire cause is under investigation.
