Car Stolen At Joliet Gas Station, Suspect Crashes In New Lenox: JPD

Joliet police officers say they learned that a Kia K5 was stolen from the parking lot while the driver was inside the store.

JOLIET — Joliet police announced that a 59-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend in connection with allegations that she stole someone's car from a gas station on Collins Street and then crashed it near the busy New Lenox intersection of East Cass Street and Gougar Road.

Joliet police said that Leshawn Jordan was arrested on charges of motor vehicle theft, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance. Jordan was taken to the Will County Jail for having outstanding arrest warrants in Will and Bureau counties.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said at 10:50 p.m., Joliet officers responded to the Exxon gas station at 334 Collins St. for a report of a stolen vehicle. Officers learned that a Kia K5 was stolen from the parking lot while the driver was inside the store.

The vehicle was unlocked and running at the time of the theft. The theft was captured on surveillance video, police said.

According to police, a short time later, officers learned that the stolen Kia had been involved in a traffic crash on East Cass Street east of Gougar Road in New Lenox. The driver of the Kia tried to run from the crash but was detained by New Lenox police, English said.

Joliet officers responded to the crash scene and identified Jordan as the suspect who stole the Kia from the Exxon station, and she was placed into custody, police said.

English said officers recovered suspected cocaine after searching Jordan. Jordan was also wanted for failing to appear in court in Bureau and Will counties for previous drug and traffic charges, respectively. Jordan was also cited for driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
