JOLIET, IL — Joliet's Chicagoland Speedway racetrack off Laraway Road has been sitting empty the past three years after NASCAR officials decided to pull Joliet off the annual racing schedule back in 2020. Last week, Joliet officials got some good news for a change: the SuperMotocross League announced that the zMAX Dragway in Charlotte and the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet will host the first-ever SuperMotocross World Championship Playoff Rounds in September.

The events will take place after the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship and Pro Motocross Championship both finish.

The first playoff round will be in Charlotte on Sept. 9 and the second playoff round set for Joliet will take place on Saturday, Sept. 23. The championship final will be in Los Angeles on Oct. 14, which is also a Saturday.

According to a press release, the Chicagoland Speedway will be easily accessible for fans traveling by car or plane. The 1.5-mile D-shaped tri-oval speedway is on more than 900 acres, which provides plenty of room for the track builders to create the layout.

"Being a world-class facility, Chicagoland provides all the modern amenities motorsports fans expect when purchasing an event ticket," SuperMotocross officials announced. "Chicagoland Speedway is no stranger to marquee events as they hosted Indy Car Series races for more than 10 years and NASCAR Cup Series races for nearly 20 years."

Joliet City Manager Jim Capparelli told Patch that the motocross playoff event in September should bring 35,000 to 40,000 racing fans to Joliet's Chicagoland Speedway.
