Cornered Crook Crashes Through Window, Dashes From Cops, Slips on Ice: Police

The law had the burglar surrounded, police said.

JOLIET, IL — A desperate prowler crashed through a window and dashed away from the cops only to slip and fall on an icy street, police said.

The police reportedly had the house near the corner of Raynor and Buell avenues surrounded when 43-year-old Artez Norwood leaped through the glass of a front window about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A short time earlier, an off-duty police sergeant on his way to the gym allegedly noticed a hooded Norwood walking through the backyard of the house on Raynor. The sergeant pulled over and waited for Norwood to exit the yard but he never emerged, police said.

The sergeant reportedly called in his suspicions and officers surrounded the house. The officers also followed footprints in the snow and found they led to an open basement window.

With cops poised outside the house, Norwood smashed through the window and made a run for it up Raynor, police said. He then turned onto Glenwood Avenue where he slipped on ice and fell down in the street.

Norwood was taken to the Will County jail. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.

In November 2000, Norwood was sentenced to six years in prison for burglary.
