WILMINGTON — Joliet Patch brought you two crime stories over the past week involving Mindaugas Stanevicius, the 49-year-old former Wilmington man evicted from a house he rented on Wilmington-Peotone Road. Now, there's a third crime story to report. On Tuesday, the Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow charged Stanevicius with felony theft.

The latest criminal complaint was filed by the Wilmington police, and the charge indicates that on Sunday, May 25, Stanevicius obtained unauthorized control over property inside the St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington, including the crucifix, candles and a towel "with the intent to deprive the owner permanently of the use or benefit of the property and said theft was committed in a place of worship."

Stanevicius now has at least three pending criminal cases at the Will County Courthouse, and Will County's judges have ordered him released on his own recognizance.

The Will County State's Attorney Office, led by Jim Glasgow, has chosen not to file any petition seeking to deny pretrial release for Stanevicius, even though in one of his criminal cases, he is accused of attacking the 68-year-old woman who was his landlord and threatening to end her life, the woman's order of petition notified Will County's judges back in February.

This week, Will County Judge Derek Ewanic noted in the court files for the criminal case from inside St. Rose Catholic Church that "while the defendant is charged with a detainable offense, the state has not filed a petition to detain."
