Mom and Teen Son Jailed After Family Feud Leaves 1 With Gunshot Wound

Police said it was a "mob scene" on Sehring Avenue after the afternoon shooting.

JOLIET, IL — A mother and her teenage son were jailed after a family feud led to a gun attack that left one man wounded, police said.

Deputies sent to Sehring Avenue Tuesday afternoon found a “mob scene” and a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his left wrist, police said. The injured man was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Numerous witnesses reportedly told police they looked on as a pickup truck and a dark colored minivan pulled up and several people armed with bats, pipes bricks — and one with a handgun — spilled out onto the street.

“People at the scene were running for cover when several shots were fired and the 31-year-old victim was struck as he was near the front of his residence,” police said.

A few hours later, the alleged triggerman, 19-year-old Brian Michalek, was apprehended during a traffic stop near the corner of Ruby and Summit streets. Michalek was “brought in for questioning and was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm,” police said.

The next day, Michalek’s mother, 45-year-old Josephine Michalek, was taken in for questioning.

“She was charged with felony mob action, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct for brandishing a crowbar-type object and her part in the incident,” police said.

Mother and son were both taken to the Will County jail.

Police said an incident earlier on Tuesday prompted Brian and Ma Michalek to arm themselves and head over to Sehring Avenue.

“This incident appears to be related to an event that had occurred earlier in the day between two female subjects from different families,” police said.
