JOLIET — The Joliet Police Department has made several arrests already this month in connection with allegations of dog owners neglecting or abusing their animals. The latest person to be taken away in handcuffs is 65-year-old Nathaniel Mayfield.
Facing charges of cruel treatment of animals, Mayfield was arrested and allowed to go home on a notice to appear in court.
Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said that at 8:08 a.m. Monday, officers responded to a residence in the 400 block of Strong Avenue for a report of a dog that appeared to be in distress. The officers located a pit bull contained inside a metal chain linked fence covered by a thin tarp.
