JOLIET — A 25-year-old Joliet citizen, Daveonte Travis, became one of the first persons zapped with a powerful Joliet police taser this year, after Travis became combative and defiant with the officers summoned to deal with Travis over the weekend at the Sidelines Sports Bar in the Marycrest shopping plaza, the arrest reports show.

Travis was not brought to the Will County Jail; instead, the officers gave him a notice to appear in Will County court on charges of criminal trespass, aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting a peace officer.

The incident resulting in Travis' arrest happened around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, the following events resulted in Travis' arrest:

The officers responded to Sidelines Sports Bar at 2006 West Jefferson Street for an unwanted patron at the bar. Upon arrival, the officers learned that Travis was refusing to leave the premises after being told to leave by security after becoming abusive toward bar employees.

While on the scene, Travis continued to yell, and members of his family tried to assist him in leaving but were unsuccessful. Travis then charged toward an officer and tried to push past them to re-enter the bar and indicated that he will go to jail, according to the arrest report.

Travis struggled with the officers as they tried to place him into custody; an officer deployed a taser and Travis was placed into custody. An ambulance was called after Travis complained of an injury, however he eventually refused medical assistance and was brought to the Joliet Police Department where he continued to threaten to physically harm the officers, English explained.

Eventually, Travis was processed and released on his notice to appear in court.
