Students at Troy Hofer Elementary School observed Fire Prevention Week with assemblies led by City of Joliet Fire Department Firefighter Bryan Ogrizovich that centered on safety.

“Stay low and go,” was one of the messages. Ogrizovich said the best thing to do during a home fire is to stay low to the ground and head outdoors to safety. If it’s not possible to leave the bedroom, shut the door and go to the window, he said, where firefighters can see you and get you to safety.

Students also learned about why it’s important for families to arrange an outdoor meeting place in case of a fire, such as a mailbox or a particular front yard tree. Students also got to see Ogrizovich’s “bunker gear” and learn why each piece is important.

Ogrizovich was also the 2019 Joliet Firefighter of the Year and is a Troy Community School District 30-C school board member.

Troy Hofer Elementary School is a Troy Community School District 30-C school.
