A Sweet Summer Staple Brings in Funds for YMCA Scholarships

Kids in the La Grange area are selling lemonade this summer to raise funds for YMCA scholarships.

The kid-staffed lemonade stand is as symbolic of summer as hot dogs, baseball games and skinned knees.

This year, kids in the La Grange area are pitching in to help raise funds for the YMCA's scholarship program, which provides funds for kids and families who can't afford classes and camps at the . They're doing it by running a lemonade stand this summer, which provides a sweet, cold treat to the neighborhood .

"Kids are out there doing [lemonade stands] anyways," said Julie Conger, a board member at the YMCA. "Kids today really enjoy it when there's a good cause attached. Kids want to give back too."

The lemonade fundraiser was launched at the end of the school year party hosted at on June 1. Over 200 lemonade stand packets were distributed, each containing a banner that reads, "This Lemonade Stand is not for me, it is for my Favorite Charity."

Families interested in getting in on a lemonade stand should stop by the , to pick up a packet. Families can also call or email the YMCA to have a packet sent to their email, Conger said.

The stands will be running all summer through Aug. 17. If the number of packets given away already is any indication, it's going to be a sweet summer in La Grange!

"If kids want to do more than one, they can," Conger said. "Families can just send in the money at the end of the summer."
