Updated: Kensington Railroad Crossing to Close Monday for 2 Days

A message from the Village of La Grange on its website says the Kensington Avenue railroad crossing will close Monday for track maintenance. Work on the tracks is expected to take two days.

Editor's Note: At a Village Board meeting on Feb. 13, Village Manager Robert Pilipszyn updated the board that after more review by Burlington Northern Santa Fe crew, the project would be postponed until April.

According to Pilipszyn, the work was more extensive than previously thought.

The Village would like to advise residents that the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad plans to perform track maintenance at the Kensington Avenue railroad crossing. The purpose of this work is to repair a defect in the rail that is currently causing a slow zone for trains through this area. A complete closure of the crossing will be required for this work starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. The BNSF has indicated that this work is anticipated to last two days.

Traffic will be detoured on Burlington and Hillgrove avenues to the rail crossings located at either Brainard Avenue to the west or Ashland Avenue to the east. Signs will be posted in the area designating the detour route for motorists while the crossing is under construction. Please be sure to let any delivery companies know of the crossing closure. Should weather delay the project, the closure would occur on a subsequent day.

While the crossing is anticipated to be closed for two days, the actual work will occur between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. due to train traffic during the busy morning and afternoon periods. Residents may also experience a temporary increase in noise levels associated with railroad equipment performing the necessary work during these hours.

Children walking to and from school are to use the Ashland Avenue grade crossing. Please note that the crossing guard will be relocated to the Ashland Avenue crossing to assist children.

Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation. The Village will work with the BNSF as much as possible to minimize the inconveniences associated with this project. If you should have any questions, please contact public works at (708) 579-2328.
