LT Student Takes Home 1st Place Award for Environmental Report

Lyons Township High School's student journalists recently received two top finishes and three honorable mentions from the Illinois Women's Press Association.

Lyons Township High School journalists are on the beat. Known as one of the nation's best high school papers, The Lion brought home a few more awards recently.

LT journalists took home two top-place finishes and three honorable mentions from the Illinois Women's Press Association's IWPA High School Communications Competition. High school journalists competed for awards in 18 categories, which include writing, photography and layout among others.

LT's student award winners will receive their awards at a luncheon on June 2 at the Union League Club in Chicago. Jennifer Roberts, of 101.9 The Mix, will be the keynote speaker.

LT's winners include Mary Cate Most, a junior from La Grange Park, who won a first place award for her in-depth environmental story, Drug Drive Prevents Abuse, Pollution. A third-place award also went to senior Rachael Schwabe of La Grange Park for her sports photography on Boys Basketball Mounts Comeback. Schwabe also received honorable mentions for another piece of photography and an opinion piece published by The Lion.

Malcolm Dunlop, a junior from Western Springs, also received an honorable mention for a column he wrote, Twitter Madness, EuroBall, Bad Habits.

Most's environmental piece will advance to the National Federation of Press Women for judging in a national competition. Results for that competition will be released in September at their national conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.
