Steal the Sign, Do the Time: Campaign Sign Theft is a Crime

No matter how big your beef with a candidate this election season, leave their campaign signs alone.

Stealing or vandalizing campaign signs is a crime, the La Grange Park Police Department said.

If signs on your property have fallen victim to someone with sour grapes, the police offer these tips for preventing it from happening again:

• Just like lights deter burglars, they also dissuade people aiming to steal signs. Keep the area illuminated.
• Keep an eye out for people trespassing on your or your neighbors’ yards.
• Call the police if you see something suspicious. You don’t even need to give your name.
• Video evidence can help in prosecuting thieves or vandals, so consider a camera if it’s an ongoing issue.
• Share with police any information you have about people who may be stealing or damaging signs.
• Doing the right thing not incentive enough? La Grange Park Police may pay a cash reward if you offer credible information that leads to an arrest or conviction in one of these cases.
