Weather Alert: Dangerously Hot Temperatures Will Hit La Grange Thursday

Cooling stations are ready for the 100-degree heat expected here by Thursday.

Get ready for a serious spell of hot weather.

Temperatures near 100 degrees are headed La Grange's way, and the city is gearing up with cooling stations and warnings.

The National Weather Service-Chicago has a Hazardous Weather Outlook in place throughout the week.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-90s on Wednesday and will hit around 100 on Thursday, the NWS said.

Afternoon highs in the 90s are expected to continue through the weekend and through next week.

There are some chances of thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday, but the likelihood is that the dry spring and early summer conditions will continue.

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows our area as "abnormally dry." The far south tip of Illinois is facing "extreme drought" conditions.

Cooling centers are available for the elderly, families with small children, and other vulnerable residents at begining Wednesday, June 27, and continuing through Friday, June 29, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

is open 24 hours a day and is also available for residents to use as a cooling center.

Tips for Dealing with Extreme Heat:

  • Frequently check on family members and the elderly who do not have air conditioning to insure their well being.
  • Drink plenty of water. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a physician before increasing liquid intake.
  • Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle.
  • Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Stay on the lowest level of your home out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.
  • Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as or Public Libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls and other community facilities. Circulating air can cool the body by increasing the perspiration rate of evaporation.
  • Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
  • Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
  • Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes.
  • Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat when out in the sun.
